Following the successful demonstration of the SPinV platform in December 2012, a permanent installation of the platform is being deployed over the first 4 floors of the building hosting the Department of Information Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications (DIET) and, at the 2nd floor, the Head Quarters of SPinV.
The permanent installation replicates and extends the platform designed for the December 2012 experimentation. It relies on a different positioning technology, and allows to test and show the services offered by the SPinV platform in a complex environment, including multi-floor and 3D positioning and navigation and high interference form external wireless networks. The WiFi infrastructure also allows to show the 3D indoor wireless network planning service offered by SPinV.
The system is presently deployed at the 2nd floor, with extension to the 1st, 3rd and 4th floors, as well as to the stairs connecting the floors, currently undergoing. When complete, the system will include over 25 reconfigurable WiFi Access Points connected to a central server running the positioning algorithm to locate WiFi equipped devices and the information database providing position-based information on activities, people and events in the DIET Department.
