Research activities

Note: I carry out my research activities in the Networking with UWB group led by Professor Maria-Gabriella Di Benedetto at the DIET Department of University of Rome La Sapienza. Please have a look at Professor Di Benedetto's website for more information about the group and its activities.

My research activities focus on the following topics:

• indoor positioning. My research activity focuses on the design of positioning algorithms, testbeds and applications.
• design of power-aware, location-based MAC and routing strategies for wireless ad hoc and sensor networks, with particular attention for low bit rate networks based on Ultra Wide Band technology. The research work aims at the definition of algorithms for resource management and routing optimized for the specific features of Ultra Wide Band, in particular ranging and distributed positioning capabilities. All aspects of an UWB communication system are considered, down from the physical layer and up to the network organization, adopting thus a cross-layer design approach. As a consequence, key aspects investigated in the framework of UWB network design are:
  • Pulse shaping
  • Ranging and Positioning
  • Medium Access Control (MAC)
  • Routing
• routing and network organization in cognitive radio networks. My research work focuses on the definition of network organization algorithms taking into account the specific requirements of cognitive radio networks, with specific focus on clustering and cooperative spectrum sensing; routing in multi-hop cognitive radion networks is a second topic of interest.

  The work on the above topics is carried out in the framework of national and international research projects. Here is a brief description of the most recent ones:

  The IC0905 (TERRA) COST Action was a think-tank that united regulatory, technical and economic experts with the objective of proposing regulatory policies and spectrum management solutions towards the development of Cognitive Radio and Software Defined Radio (CR/SDR) technologies.

  
  

  The IC0902 COST Action had the main goal to integrate the cognitive concept across all layers of communication systems, aiming at the creation of a European platform for cognitive radio and networks. by defining algorithms and protocols for all layers of the communications, and a set of standard interfaces as well as a common reference language for interaction between cognitive network nodes.

  
  

  The ACROPOLIS Network of Excellence had the main goal to foster collaboration in the cognitive and cooperative communications domain, allowing experts in areas of cooperative communications and coexistence methods, comprising but not limited to realms such as cognitive radio, cognitive networking and flexible networking to cooperate and harmonize their research goals.
