The UWB Radio Fundamentals course consists of a 6-credit unit. It aims to provide advanced knowledge of Ultra-Wideband (UWB) wireless communication technology and its application to the design of advanced wireless systems.
- UWB signals and their characteristics in the time and frequency domains
- Design of a single UWB communication link, including achievable performance under AWGN and multipath channel conditions
- Network-wide analysis of UWB networks at the PHY and MAC layers
- Multi-User Interference (MUI) modelling for UWB signals
- Ranging and localization capabilities of UWB technology, with comparison to Wi-Fi
- Pulse shaping of UWB signals
- Applications of UWB in 5G networks, including NOMA and Terahertz communications
- Experimental platforms: Qorvo DWM development boards

Course material
- Understanding Ultra Wide Band Radio Fundamentals, Prentice Hall Communications Engineering and Emerging Technologies Series, ISBN:0-13-148003-0, 2004, M.-G. Di Benedetto e Guerino Giancola
- Slides and practice material will be made available before each class on the course Moodle page
Assessment method
Students are required to attend both theoretical and practical classes. The work carried out by students during the practical sessions, as well as independently as homework, will be considered as part of the final exam.
Students who attend the classes will complete the exam with an oral presentation at the end of the course. The presentation will focus on a topic covered during the course, which will be selected and assigned by the instructors a few days before the exam.
Students who do not attend the classes will be required to pass a preliminary written test in order to be admitted to the oral presentation.
